RPCC Reaches Out to Students Displaced by For-Profit College Closure

By Brandon Keller

Students displaced by the recent closure of a for-profit college in Ascension Parish have a new option for completing their education at River Parishes Community College.

RPCC and the Louisiana Technical College – Ascension Campus are working diligently to accommodate every student affected by the for-profit college closure.

“The adoption of the displaced students is both a challenge and an opportunity, and RPCC wants to clearly step into a new role to serve learners who would otherwise be left without the opportunity to continue their education,” RPCC Chancellor Joe Ben Welch said. “RPCC is a rapid responder and we want to demonstrate to students and our community that they can depend on us.”

The College has already received approval to offer an additional practical nursing class for displaced LPN students by the State Board of Nursing. The displaced LPN students will be able to enter the program right where they left off.

RPCC intends to offer other programs to displaced students.  The administration is hiring faculty and purchasing equipment to accommodate the enrollment increase. These programs include the medical assistant program, medical office assistant program and business office assistant program.

The College was able to contact LPN students through a meeting held at the Board of Regents; however, RPCC does not have contact information for students who were enrolled in other programs at the for-profit college.

Dr. Welch said displaced students should contact RPCC as soon as possible at (225) 675-5397 to register for the fall semester. Displaced students interested in attending RPCC will need to complete an application. The College will waive the application and testing fees for all displaced students and is working diligently to ensure students will not be negatively impacted by recent events.
