“Stop, drop and roll” is a phrase commonly heard at fire prevention seminars hosted by the local fire station.

However, the students at Gonzales Primary School learned this phrase from a different source: students from River Parishes Community College (RPCC).   One hundred twenty five RPCC students from 10 different courses taught over 500 Gonzales Primary School students how to prepare for and deal with emergencies, including fire safety and hurricane preparedness, through a series of interactive skits and games.  Included in this group of students were several students from Students In Service (SIS), a scholarship program for students who have demonstrated a commitment to community service.

The program was part of RPCC’s emphasis on service learning, the practice whereby students learn course material through teaching the material to others.

RPCC sponsored the annual event, which is in its sixth year.
