Hurricanes Gustav and Ike swept into the Gulf Coast in September 2008, causing businesses and schools across the state to shutter their doors due to power outages and damage. River Parishes Community College lost a few trees, but sprung only a small leak in one building. Classes resumed Sept. 10, but the campus closed again that Friday as Ike stoked winds up to 60 miles per hour. RPCC reopened Sept. 15
