River Parishes Community College (RPCC) and the Southern University Law Center (SULC) joined forces on Saturday, February 1 to host an impactful Expungement Event at RPCC’s Reserve Campus, providing individuals with the opportunity to clear eligible criminal records. The event, which served more than 200 community members, aimed to break down barriers to employment, housing, and education, paving the way for brighter futures.
“We believe that access to justice includes second chances,” said Marla Dickerson, M.S., J.D., Ph.D., Vice Chancellor of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives at SULC.
“Today’s event was about empowering individuals to move forward without the burden of past mistakes limiting their opportunities,” said Louisiana State Representative Ken Brass. “By working with SULC, RPCC and our community partners, we are opening doors to meaningful careers and stability for so many.”
Attendees received free legal assistance from SULC’s expert team, ensuring they understood the expungement process and their eligibility. In addition to legal services, Ochsner Health provided health screenings, and RPCC representatives were on-site to guide individuals through workforce training opportunities, financial aid options, and high school equivalency programs.
“RPCC is committed to providing pathways to opportunity, and today’s event was a powerful example of that mission in action,” said RPCC Chancellor Quintin Taylor. “Expungement is more than clearing a record—it’s about opening doors to education, employment, and a fresh start. We are proud to stand alongside SULC and our partners in making a lasting impact in the River Parishes.”
The event highlighted the critical role of collaboration in removing barriers for individuals looking to improve their lives. By addressing both legal and educational needs, RPCC and SULC continue to support the community in meaningful ways.
